Artworking; December 2017

Rosie, artworker January 1, 2018

In December 2017 I finished a commission that began as a concept around 5 months ago. We kicked the idea around for several weeks, honing the 'vision' to work within the similarly evolving design of the location of where the piece would be installed (to suit the area's function and requirements), in consultation with the project control group and interior designers. We wanted gold, we wanted special - nay, we demanded special - and we wanted...something really goldy and special-ified. Landscapey. Weaving-like. Costly looking done cleverly enough so as to not actually cost too much. Weeks of development.

How to practically make the thing was thus a process of extensive sampling, with more weeks of back & forth imagery refining and colour direction, with the production then taking place (whilst still evolving!) over six weeks or so. The finished piece is 1425x1950mm, comprising hundreds of unique pieces of texture & finish mounted on a custom made board.

It was an enormous amount of work & I cant publicly show photos of it due to a not unusual contract condition. A lot of the time, the work I make is for a select audience and exclusivity is the watchword, as is confidentiality due to the sensitive nature of the non-public locations. Think high rollers and leave it at that. I worked hard and long on this project and learnt a lot along the way. I've been gilding for decades now & its just so cool that there's still, always, something new to derive from its use, new looks and combinations and variations and....yeah, the look of the thing. Really cool, I did some nice things here and what an amazing opportunity. I am grateful for it.
