Stimming and the Great OutdoorsStimming and the Great Outdoors | 2018 | Diptych 910x1870mm overall | Acrylic, pastels, oil medium, mica pigments on canvasAt nearly 2 meters wide, this mirrored landscape is both an homage to one of my favourite painters, Conrad Martens and a metaphor for my connection to my son E. The mass of small marks that create the batik design (a remnant of my South-East Asian childhood) manifest the compulsive, repetitive physical tics associated with autism. Both landscape & patterning are crushed vertically, compressed towards each other in an inward facing dialogue navigating the densely detailed, simple & complex negotiations surrounding family life.

After the Rain #1Gold and white gold leaf, silver and aluminum leaf, oils, acrylics on canvas. Artist's frame with cast resin ornaments. 2mm aluminum wire & epoxy resin
After the Rain #3Oil on canvas, 22 carat & 12 carat white gold leaf, aluminium and composite metal leaf, oil size““After the Rain” refers to memories of the nightly tropical thunderstorms in Bogor, West Java, and the mirrored landscape to the periods in my life that came before, and after, we lived there, with my father’s sudden, shocking death having caused us a new life in Australia. There was definitely a before and after. Even though I was the same person, I never matched up. The schism was profound and I’m still chasing it. West Java is an incredibly beautiful place, my Camelot, and 12-year-old me found the Brisbane suburbs a very far remove. But enough of the tropics remained so that every time it rained, I felt connected to something that I’d lost but I couldn’t catch it in my hand, it was quicksilver.” Manifesting time by the acts of multiple gestures, smudges and paint strokes, the countless layers combine to identify a landscape, to almost carve an image onto canvas in a bid to create it’s “proof”. The materiality of chosen media – oils and gold leaf - construct a densely worked but delicate surface, where the adding and subtracting successive observations of a digital image creates a patina, the very definition of time.

Afternoon [detail]Finalist, Lethbridge art prizeThis work feels like a memory I think I have, where the air is a floating thing and theres something sifting through it, like a blessing or a certainty that things will go on and that its special, to be here just now, right now, but back then too.Oil on aluminium leaf on modified plaster texture on heavy rag paper, patinated fluorescent gouache, gold leaf on hand carved wood ornament. Artist's gilded frame Size: 230 x 230mm
Heartsease 2020Acrylic, oil, coloured pencil, ink on heavy rag paper edged with gilded wallpaper mounted on board; attributive frieze with individually carved “Heartsease” motif gilded wood ornaments; pine & aluminium shelf; a supply of battery powered LED lightsThis work employs symbols but is the sum of its parts: The landscape is mirrored like hands held in prayer; the code "P-121" (Psalms 121 - "look to the mountain from where my help comes") directs my hope and despairs; our family, like others, has been sorely tested. Nothing is certain. The central drawing - extracted from Fra Angelico's San Domenico Altarpiece - makes clear that this is a devotional object in the Christian tradition, a location for spiritual meditation. The linework could be a barrier through which we may cross, defend, tear down or abide by. Like a house. In PNG pidgin English, all women are "Mary"; this central female figure has two children, reflecting my experience of motherhood. It is blood red. The attributive frieze of individually hand cut 'Heartsease' ornaments surrounds the work, amulets of love, constancy & protection. The landscape begins as John Glover's already fantastical "Tasmanian Gorge"; I have made it golden, precious, glowing; God's grace covers the land. Virgil's text, Sunt Lacrimae Rerum; God weeps with us, all things shed tears but also: beauty. Future. Light a candle. Maybe the bravest thing to do at the moment is to just sit, and have faith. 2020

'Nell-Anne Quilt' project, McCahon House NZ…decorate a piece of fabric with the name of a woman who has had meaning in your life. These will be quilted together forming a patchwork of many women’s names in homage to women’s creativity and craft, work and labour. One will be decorated with the name ANNE, after Anne McCahon (nee Hamblett), and the other with the artist’s name – NELL, acknowledging where the particularities of Anne & Nell’s individual stories interchange with a collective female history….

A Singular Moment of Forever. Small landscape art prize2019. Diptych 10x16 inches overall. Acrylic, watercolour, gold metal leaf, enamel & pigment ink on cotton rag paper mounted on board. I finished this image two days after our dog died. It uncapped a torrent of emotion in me, like I felt the grief for every loss I had ever known. I hesitate to admit that in case others think it a petty and disproportionate response to the actual event. I’d already created the main image, with elements that held personal meanings and wider observations on colonialism – overabundant landscapes, houses representing self, gold lace diversion – which suddenly seemed like empty gestures in the face of my losses. The red, spontaneous eruption of raw, violent grief felt like the least I could do.

Stimming and the Great Outdoors, studio [first iteration] Stimming and the Great Outdoors | 2018 | Diptych 910x1870mm overall | Acrylic, pastels, oil medium, oil pastels, mica pigments on canvasWhile this piece is an observation on living with my eldest son's autism, I think the ideas are in time with how we all navigate the world now. We construct a barricade: we do social media. Squares on gallery pages like gridded scaffolding, scaffolding as containment. Constructing a world, partitioning & separating from the natural world, commodifying it. We have created a world obsessed by surfaces and there's a fundamental failure of societal cohesion; maybe if we squint our eyes it'll all come together but for now, just keep walking the line.Autism cuts through this in a different mental process because the rules of engagement are irrelevant, everything is new & experienced as a new encounter, every day, considered and negotiated according to its singular merit. Every time. Nothing is assumed when life is re-evaluated daily, resulting in constant anxiety and existential pain. And that shit has to be contained. Designing board games is comforting because of the order it imposes. In both cases, the landscape is compressed across the width, increasing the interior pressure, just like suburban landscapes can feel. Drama like you wouldn’t believe. So if you think about it, life is really like this for all of us, its just that we're more willing & able to stomach it without dissent, we're better at faking/lying about our ease, or our sense of ease in this world. Either way, our compulsion to map God looks the same & the result is a lot of noise. So in the interests of visual harmony, I ditched the grid.None of this is news but I think its still worth saying
