Singer sewing jewellery souvenir gift

Rosie, artworker December 12, 2022

Hello friends. Do you sew? Then this is for you!

The humble drawer pull escutcheon repurposed as a magnificent brooch for your finery, made by yours truly and my husband’s vintage sewing machine restoration side hustle

Here

He found this metal escutcheon (covering over the join of drawer handle to wooden drawer) on a vintage Singer sewing cabinet and dutifully handed it over/I swooped in for the seizure, in my limitless capacity for the acquisition of decorative objects. You know how it goes.

I did the obvious & took a silicone mold of it because its something I really like, which means I need to have more than one, so can now make MANY, satisfying my lust for gold in equal measure. Because I GILDED THEM ALL and in another obvious move I ADDED THINGS TO IT. Like a pearl and gold plated chains (mmmmm chains) and/or a shiny star charm or heart charm. Theres a button back attached to the reverse so it can be converted as a button, in a very Schiaparelli move. In this way, the brooches are pinned over the functional buttons, and then secured with a couple of stitches

YES. Schiaparelli describe them as “trompe l’oeil buttons”, meaning they’re not actually buttons, just where buttons would be

Button back

because we options

OPTIONS: due to the excellent button facility, this wondrous piece of sewing related madness can be worn as a necklace pendant. I KNOW RIGHT?? Amaze. I have two options in the shop, but any fine chain can be threaded through that button hole and I’m sending them with a large jumpring attached anyway so you’re good to go with almost any chain

35mm square, rises to about 1cm in the middle. Weighs very little.

I admit I have not done much sewing at all over the last 18 months because I’ve been so obsessed with jewellery & shelfing makings in the studio but over this coming Christmas break, I’m gonna be into it and… have been quietly accruing new fabrics over the last few months as my need to sew has been knocking. The feel to sewing can come & go and anyone who sews will confirm I’m sure. Sewjo come, sewjo go, roll with it. Then make fuckoff buttons. Best of both worlds!

On display at Paddington markets, come see me!

Buy a set of five & give it more of your Schiaparelli best

Anything Schiaparelli can do…

My but it looks good!

Does my Skims mesh crop top look big in this? I was just trying it on in the time honoured sewist way; strip off where you stand & see how it looks. I’m not cool enough to get around town with a mesh crop top underneath a blazer

get on it

shop it

Isn’t it wonderful? All in all, you’ll have to agree, its a great thing that you didn’t know you needed but now, YOU DO KNOW
