The Puppy paintings: yes, dog portraits

This is a photo from way in the future of this post’s publishing, see it here

Now this is a pretty dog. Her name is "Puppy" and she's a 4 year old Pug/Jack Russell cross. Two artworks were commissioned by her owners; one digital print on canvas (for installation in busy Architect's office) and one large oil painting for the client's home.

A 'similar but different' approach was taken for the artworks. The owner has a collection of Persian carpets, of which Puppy is very fond, so both feature that as well as a full face image of Puppy herself.

The artworks were both designed on good old Power Point; I find this simpler than Photoshop to be honest and I'm a whiz at it for basic image effects editing. The canvas print was made from a jpeg too! Easy, just tinkered with the printing & oversaturated the inks so the pixellation was blended. Result is a rich watercolour effect, very nice.

Puppy's on the Carpet Again. 2013

The client supplied me with a (vast) selection of Puppy photos - these below I selected - and I used a few different decorative carpet backgrounds, ( an abundant supply of Persian carpet images are available on Google, believe me) shown here:

As I said, it's really easy to do slight variations by manipulating the images on PowerPoint. Before I knew it, we had a few to choose from: **click on an image for the gallery of uncropped pictures.

Two images were chosen. The printing on canvas was sorted out over a few trials with my friendly digital printers and finished with a simple dark stained timber frame. For the painting it's oils on canvas, with a deep stretcher profile so it can be hung without being framed. Although I think a kick-arse frame would kick-arse.
